Malacca Butterfly and Reptile Sanctuary

Selamat datang ke Melaka!

As part of my series on Melaka, my hometown, a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a historic city of the Straits of Malacca, I am sharing these photographs of the Malacca Butterfly and Reptile Sanctuary.

First of all, I have to admit that my sole purpose of visiting this place was to photograph the butterflies. Secondly, I am not too keen on photographing reptiles. In fact, I sort of closed my eyes and ran past the snake collection area. I did brave myself enough to snap a few shots of the crocodiles, but one of them gave me a hungry look, so I walked hurriedly on. Hence, these photographs I am posting are only of pretty birds and butterflies, and harmless tortoises and koi. No snakes, my apologies.

Pretty Polly welcomes the visitors.

 90% of these photos are straight out of the camera (SOOC)...including the parrot images and the peacock. For the peahen, I had to pop her colour a little as she is rather a Plain Jane.

Another Polly says hello. (No, she merely squawked )

Pouty Peahen is pretty proud too.

"Do you think we qualify for Mellow Yellow Monday? We are pretty yellow up-front!"

I can't figure out the significance of the giant eggs...this leads to the butterfly sanctuary!

Stop me if keep on filling this post with the butterfly photos I took. I love them all...

However, I shall try my best to limit myself to publishing one of each variety...if I can. Oh, this is really hard for me.

A shadow shot...a 12 o'clock shadow, to be precise!

A Taste of the Orient...

Don't they look inviting? These were available as we climbed the foothill of Changshan Mountain in Dali, China. The baskets were beautifully adorned with melons, bananas, sea-coconut, oranges and many unfamiliar varieties of local fruit. We bought some on the way down, of course!

        These kumquat on the plant are from my own garden haven.

Mediterranean Mellow

What colour do you associate with the Mediterranean? Earthy Tuscan terracotta colours? Tawny russet hues?


This is what mellow Mediterranean tones mean to me...it is reflected in the colours of the food and the thematic interpretation of the decor in the restaurants and cafes.


My first Mediterranean meal was in Barcelona. When in Spain...have a paella! Don't you just love the colours here? The cafe in the photograph is in a different part of Barcelona...it is near the Sagrada Familia. I love the mural of the harlequin and his mandolin.






When in Paris...you just have to drink cafe au lait at the side-walk cafes.

Of course you might also want to try typical French food, like we did at this chic restaurant.

In Italy, the tourist spots are always crowded...look at the hungry people at this side-walk cafe in Rome. My advice is, in this situation, when in Rome, do as the Romans do...grab a panini and gelato as you go.







When in Capri, dine in style. This  restaurant on the road to Anacapri has a rustic charm...the thatched roof, the dine-in-the-garden-overlooking-the-cliff concept, the lemon-laden lemon trees surrounding the dining area, all these contributed to an ambience that is unforgettable. Of course the food was also fabulous.







If you notice,  yellow seems to be the predominant colour in all these photographs. Hence this post is dedicated to Mellow Yellow Monday. Of course all the collages are dedicated to Mosaic Monday. And for Macro Monday, here's my favourite close-up of yellow jugs from the shelf of my favourite ceramic-ware shop in Anacapri.

        

Portraits

The true mark of a place is much more than the architecture, the clime or the geography but the people who live in that place. 




     These are the happy faces of people you see at work,
     or on a holiday just like you.

Visitors at Yuantong Temple, Changshan Mountain and Stone Forest, and a tea-promoter at Kunming.

      Sometimes you catch them off-guard ...
      the serious expressions of people at work.

A souvenir stall owner who does her own embroidery of souvenir items, lady buggy-drivers at the Stone Forest.

       The faces  of actors  with make-up on, acting out
       stories of their customs:

A Bai minority bride in shades at a mock wedding, and scenes from the studios of the television series, Tianlongbabu.

        The faces of children in their own happy world: 

City girls in the top row, country boys in the bottom row.

         I see the faces in the park,  and wonder what their lives 

         are like...

These ladies from the Naxi minority are deep in conversation, oblivious of the shutterbugs giving them the celebrity treatment.

All smiles...so they were aware after all, that they were the centre of attraction.
